GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN is kicking off its 20th year with an exhibition highlighting art with “width, height and depth” called “Art in the Third Dimension.”

The sculpture-centric exhibit features the work of five Louisiana artists: Cindy Blair, Sherri Manes, Tony McDonald, Martin Needom and James Turner.

Mcdonald, gallery coordinator, Gallery One Eleven, said that the public suggested the concept of a three-dimensional exhibit during a panel discussion last year.

There are 35 works in the show representing various mediums, including materials like found objects, welded steel, formed synthetic plastic, bamboo, plaster, driftwood, paint and soft plastic. McDonald – a Leesville based painter and sculptor – constructed his pieces with found objects, construction materials and other common resources. He said that through found objects, audiences can see how perspective shifts can bring new life to items.

“One nice thing about this exhibit is that it shows how common objects can be assembled to create a work that can be looked at and addressed in different ways, and that thoughtful consideration of shape, color line and scale can transform common items into beautiful sculpture.”

Leesville resident Turner – an author, painter, sculptor and landscape architect – also used found objects in his work. However, his work was made with natural and local found materials.

Hailing from Hornbeck, Manes sculpts metal on both medium and large scales, and often focuses her work on “equestrian and nature themes.”

Blair, an artist from Alexandria, has “undulating lighted works of translucent plastic” on display. Mcdonald said Blair’s pieces are “ethereal and flowing, with organic and spiritual references.”

“Art in the Third Dimension” will also feature the “contemporary, abstract and non-objective” sculptures of New Orleans native Martin Needom. In his work, he uses a wide range of materials, including paper, wood, stone, acrylic composite, steel and bronze.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be hosted at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 27. “Art in the Third Dimension” will be available for viewing from Thursday, January 25 to March 9 at the Gallery, 111 Third St., Leesville.
