Arlene H. Miers, daughter of Charles & Rose Herberg, was born on Aug. 6 1938 in Graceville, Minn. and raised in Washington State before moving to Louisiana to raise her own family. She passed away in her home in Singer, La. on Dec. 30 2023. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, & great-great-grandchildren. Her greatest joy was found in her family, whether it was impromptu trips with her husband when he was still with us on a whim to go explore and antique, or taking the grandkids to town only to end up in another state and calling their parents to let them know the kids may be a little late coming home by a day or two instead of hour or two. She had a devious sense of humor and adventurous spirit that any of her family can attest to and was the ring leader in many pranks that occurred over the years. She was a woman of God and loved her church and church family at Singer Baptist Church. She never met a stranger and had a heart of gold. 

She worked at Singer High School in the 70’s and loved the students with all her whole heart. A classmate of mine, Lorraine, reminded me of a poem she taught him – “Help us to do the things we should, to be to others kind and good in all we do, in work or play, to grow more loving every day”. This was her life and after 40 plus years she still lived by that example. Thank you, Joseph Nelson, for reminding me of this. 

She also worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in DeRidder, La. in the 70’s until it closed the end of 1980. She then worked for Dr J. Lane Sauls MD for five years handling insurance billing and this is what got her to Hixson & Sons Insurance in 1985. This was at the time when agents would go into homes and visit their clients. This was her favorite part, she made so many friends and met family members along the way. She also worked for Liberty Life AGLA among others. After retiring for a year, she re-entered the work force as she missed the people, Hixson Funeral Home was her home once again. 

When she turned 80 years old, she decided to retire again to be able to travel more to see our family in Seattle, Wash. She longed for her mountains. She was until the end declaring she was going home to see her sisters and brother (and her mountains once more). She would make return trips home to Washington as often as possible, where it was a must to make her pilgrimage to the mall with her sister, Mary Lou and be greeted by name by the associates, she come to call friends over the years, or take trips to Snohomish or Leavenworth with her siblings and their families and visit the mountains especially “her” Mount Rainier. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Kenneth (Bo) Maul Sr. and Walter Miers Jr.; Daughter-In-Law, Carla Miers, and nephew, Brian Herberg.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Kenneth (Anne) Miers, David Miers, Jimmy (Rachel) Miers, Michael Miers and daughter, Lorraine (Don) Kerbow all of Singer, La. and bonus child, Sara (Sean) Miller of Baytown, Texas. Grandchildren, Leanna Miers, Chris (Kayla) Miers, Letishia Miers, Cody (Leslie) Miers, Kelli (John) Tankersley, Kayla (Peter) White, Brandon Miers, Kelsy (Sarah) Miers, and Alexander (Kirsten) Kerbow all of Louisiana; sisters, Jeanne Turner and Mary Lou (Ron) Lageson and brother, Charlie (Vicki) Herberg all of Washington. As well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and continue Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 at 9 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, La. Burial will follow at Newlin Cemetery in Singer, La. Pallbearers are Alexander Kerbow, Cody Miers, Matthew Miers, Kelsy Miers, Taylor Dobson, and Paul Williams. Brother Jimmy Clark will preach the service and Shannon Cooley will be reading her Eulogy.
