Quinn, Welch top all-Vernon Parish basketball teams

One player guided their team to a fourth straight state championship. The other helped lead his team to the state semifinals despite losing its top eight players from a season ago.
Hicks senior Lauren Quinn and Anacoco sophomore Dustin Welch were chosen as the Most Valuable Players on the all-Vernon Parish basketball teams, as selected by the staff of BWS Sports.
Quinn, a Nichols State signee, was a double-double machine for the Lady Pirates as they cruised to a fourth straight state championship. In the title game against Gibsland-Coleman, she scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Hicks won Class C for a third straight seasonal
Welch, who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per night, was the MVP of District 5-B, leading the Indians to an undefeated league campaign. Anacoco reached theClass B semifinals once again as it sported a 31-10 record on the year.
Anacoco’s Brayden Prichard and Rosepine’s Barbra Ann White were named the Defensive Players of the Year, while Simpson’s Kodi Miller and Rosepine Hayden Brister were the Newcomers of the Year.
Coach of the Year honors went to Hornbeck’s Matthew Killian on the girls’ side, while Simpson’s Jade Losavio won the same honor on the boys’ side.
The girls’ all-parish first-team consists of Rosepine’s Kelly Norris, Hornbeck’s Hannah Dahlhoff, Anacoco’s Bailey Davis, Hicks senior Avery Coffman and Evans’ Riley Haus, while the boys’ first-team was Simpson’s Braxton Basco, Hornbeck’s Brady Alexander, Anacoco’s Chase Taylor, Leesville’s Daven Scott and Simpson’s Brayden Cutts.
Second-team performers on the girls’ squad included Rosepine’s Taylor Farris, Hicks’ Reese Stephens, Leesville’s Amaya Thomas, Anacoco’s Paige Mayo, Pitkin’s Abby Robinson and Pickering’s Ariana Yates. The second-team boys’ selections were Hornbeck’s Jaren Mitcham, Pickering’s Marlon Freeney, Rosepine’s Braydon Williams, Evans’ Zane West and Pitkin’s Jayce Thompson.
