Simpson dominates in Vernon basketball tourney semifinals

ANACOCO — The Simpson Broncos landed a quartet of players in double figures as they dominated the Evans Eagles in the semifinals of the Vernon Parish Tournament on Tuesday, 64-46.

After taking a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Broncos used a 16-6 advantage in the second period to open up a 30-17 cushion going into the halftime break.

Despite giving up 18 points to the Eagles in the third period, the Broncos managed to add to their lead heading into the fourth, 50-35.

The Broncos closed the game the same way they opened it, using a 14-11 edge to account for the final margin of victory.

Brayden Cutts led Simpson with 25 points, while Ethan Nash finished with 13 points. Heath Dalme and Braxton Basco each netted 10 points in the win.

Wyatt Austin paced the Eagles with 13 points, while Roco Evans added 12 points.

Leesville…..46

The Anacoco Indians limited the Leesville Wampus Cats to just 16 points over the first three periods of play to come away with a 55-46 win on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Vernon Parish Tournament.

After battling to a 10-10 stalemate at the end of the first eight minutes, Anacoco used a 10-4 scoring edge in the second to take a 20-14 lead into the locker room at the half.

Anacoco continued to build on its lead in the third as Leesville managed just 10 points in the third as the Indians took firm control into the fourth with a 33-16 advantage.

The Wampus Cats came to life offensively in the fourth period, but it was too little, too late as Anacoco claimed the win.

Dustin Welch finished with 15 points to lead Anacoco, while Emanuel Luzardo and Kaleb Goodwin added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Daven Scott led the Wampus Cats with 13 points, while Griffin Westfall chipped in with 10 points.

GIRLS SEMIFINALS

Rosepine……66

Anacoco……63

The Rosepine Lady Eagles took advantage of a late turnover to knock off the Anacoco Lady Indians in overtime, 66-63, in the semifinals of the Vernon Parish Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

Rosepine owned a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, only to see Anacoco rally with a 25-point outburst in the second to take a 31-27 advantage in the halftime intermission.

The Lady Eagles rallied back with an 18-9 surge in the third to open up a 45-40 lead going into the final frame of regulation.

Anacoco once again battled back, tying the game up at 59-59 heading into the overtime session.

However, the ball bounced the way of the Lady Eagles in overtime as they secured the win, 66-63.

Addison Fruge led the way for the Lady Eagles with 20 points, while Kelly Norris chipped in with 13 points. Navaeh Rivera and Taylor Farris each added 10 points in the game.

Paige Mayo paced Anacoco with 19 points, while Abbie Dowden and Bailey Davis finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Hicks………66

Hornbeck….32 

Shyanne Phillips poured in a career-high 27 points to help lead the Hicks Lady Pirates to a 66-32 win over the Hornbeck Lady Hornets on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Vernon Parish Tournament.

The Lady Pirates, who never trailed in the contest, took a 14-5 lead at the end of the first period and used a 20-8 run in the second quarter to build a 34-13 advantage at the break.

Hicks continued its domination in the second half en route to advancing to the tournament finals.

Joining Phillips in double figures for Hicks was Reese Stephens with 18 points, while Avery Coffman netted 11 points.

Hannah Dahlhoff paced Hornbeck with 11 points.
