Hooper, Mahfouz win state titles at Class 1A championships

Merryville's Mekyah Hooper took home first place in the girls' high jump at the Class 1A state track and field championships on Thursday in Baton Rouge.

BATON ROUGE – It was a stellar day for a pair of Merryville Lady Panthers.

Mekyah Hooper brought home first place in the high jump, while Maddie Mahfouz took top honors in the 300-meter hurdles as they guided the Lady Panthers to a fifth-place finish in the team standings at the Class 1A track and field championships at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of Louisiana State University on Thursday.

The Lady Panthers scored 43 points in the meet, which was won by Ouachita Christian, which had 80 points. East Iberville was second with 56 points, while Highland Baptist and Cedar Creek were third and fourth with 45.5 and 44 points, respectively.

Hooper added a bronze medal in the 400 meters, while Mahfouz grabbed sixth in the high jump. They also teamed up with Kaylie Lewis, who was second in the long jump, and Samantha Johnson to take third place in the mile relay.

Hooper, Mahfouz and Johnson teamed up with McKenna Speights to take fifth in the 800-meter relay.

In the Class 1A boys' meet, East Beauregard scored 10 points, finishing 15th in the team standings, which was also won by Ouachita Christian.

Kobie Bailey was the state runner-up in the pole vault, while teammate Chase Singleton was fifth in the high jump.
