The Anacoco Lady Indians claimed the Class B runner-up trophy as they fell to second-ranked Holden in the state finals in Sulphur on Saturday, 11-6.

SULPHUR – There are times when things just get away from you.

The third inning proved to be the one that got away from the ninth-seeded Anacoco Lady Indians on Saturday as they fell to the second-ranked Holden Lady Rockets in the Class B finals at Frasch Park, 11-6.

The youthful Lady Indians, who started more junior high players than seniors, finished the season with a record of 20-15. But most notably, they upset three higher-ranked teams en route to the state finals.

And they had perennial powerhouse Holden on the ropes early.

Bailey Davis drove in her little sister, Ava, for the first run of the game and Anna Claire Vinson connected on a sacrifice fly to score Jaiden Craft for a 2-0 advantage.

Holden answered back when Taylor Douglas scored after drawing a walk, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Lady Indians got that run back in the second when Brooklyn Bryant scored on a groundout by Ava Davis for a 3-1 cushion.

But then came the bottom of the third.

A few errors and timely hitting by the Lady Rockets allowed Holden to score eight times, taking a 9-3 lead. In the inning, Gracie Duffy had a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Ava Roussel added two RBIs as Holden took over.

Anacoco got a run in the fourth when senior Reagan Stanley doubled and scored on a Craft groundout. But Holden got a solo homer in the fifth from Douglas to push the lead to 10-4.

The Lady Indians refused to die, scoring two times in the sixth. Bryant and Ava Davis each scored in the frame to cut the gap to 10-6.

But a run in the bottom of the sixth and a perfect inning from Douglas in the seventh ended Anacoco's bid for a state title.
