Simpson knocks off Leesville, Hicks falls

LEESVILLE – The Simpson Broncos limited the Leesville Wampus Cats to just 14 second-half points en route to a 50-36 win on Friday at Leesville High School at the Mickey Goins Memorial Tournament.

Simpson and Leesville were locked in a close battle during the first half as the Broncos took a 16-13 lead after one quarter. Simpson added to its advantage in the second period with a 12-9 scoring edge, going into the locker room up, 28-22.

The Broncos clamped down on defense in the second half, allowing just five Leesville points in the third, pushing Simpson to a 40-27 lead.

Simpson held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the game, claiming the win.

Rhett Petre led Simpson with 21 points, while Zach Vargas added 12 in the victory.

Davean Scott paced Leesville with 15 points.

Red River Bulldogs…..63

Hicks Pirates…..28

The Red River Bulldogs jumped out to a huge early lead and never looked back in rolling past the Hicks Pirates on Friday at Leesville High School in the Mickey Goins Memorial Tournament, 63-28.

Red River held the Pirates without a field goal until right before the end of the first quarter as the Bulldogs built a 13-3 lead behind eight points from D'Evan McDonald.

It was more of the same in the second period as a 21-7 run by Red River allowed the Bulldogs to claim a 34-10 advantage going into the intermission.

Hicks managed to outscore Red River in the third behind a couple of buckets from Connor Helton, but the Pirates still trailed, 44-22, going into the final frame.

Red River responded with a 19-6 run to end the contest, claiming a win for the second straight day.

McDonald led Red River with 16 points, while Antron Williams finished with 12 points.

Helton had seven points to pace Hicks, while Hayden Doyle and Brad Pelt added six apiece.
