James Leverne Smith

Funeral services for James Leverne Smith, 84, of
Leesville, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday May 22, 2021 in the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville with Bro Rickey Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Castor Cemetery in Leesville.

Visitation will be
Friday, May 21, 2021 from 5:00 P.M– 8:00 P.M in the funeral home.

James LeVerne Smith was born on October 11, 1936 in Leesville, La to James Flementine and Audria Jeane Smith and passed from this life on May 17, 2021 at the age
of 84. He graduated in 1955 from Leesville High School, then joined the Air Force soon after. LeVerne served in the Air Force duirng the Cold War as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief in the 11th Air Refueling Squadron, 341st Bombaradment Wing, 15th
Air Force Strategic Air Command. He served in such places as Alaska, Japan, Hawaii, the Philippines, Guam, the Aleutian Islands from 1955 to 1959. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he obtained a Electronics diploma from Sabine Valley
Vocational Technical School in 1968. Then, later in life, he worked as Superintendent of Maintenance of the Warrior Hills Golf Course. He loved to mechanic and mow grass. Both of which he was exceptional.

He is preceded in
death by his parents, James Flementine and Audria Jeane Smith; brother, Gilbert Glayson Smith; sister, Gloria Rose Smith Stanly Bolton; brothers-in-law, R.T. Stanly; and Theodore (Ted) Bolton.

Left to cherish his memory are
step-son Dale Dancy of Lake Charles, La and step-daughter Colleen Dancy Abbot of Gaithersburg, MD; step-grandchildren Crystal Bonner Jeane, Evan Abbot, Lance Dancy and Deanna Dancy Dowden. His sister Laura Kay Smith Hollingsed (Michael) of El Paso,
TX and Leesville, La; nieces Darlea Stanly Feldt (Barry) of Houston, TX; Stacey Stanly Laughlin (Robert) of Anacoco, La; Tasha Hollingsed (Colin Johnson) of Phoenixville, PA; Rita Bolton Midkiff (Danny) of Leesville, La; Stacey Bolton Jenkins of
Anacoco, La. Nephews Tracey Stanly of DeRidder, La and Michael C. Hollingsed (Sharon) of Las Vegas, NV. Along with a host of great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces.

LeVerne is a descendant of the Vernon
Parish pioneer families. He traveled the world during his life endeavors, but always loved his home in Vernon Parish and came home as often as possible until finally hanging up his travel hat in 1959 to call Vernon Parish his final home. He loved
being outdoors fishing, hunting, gardening, and riding old tractors. He enjoyed photography in nature taking pictures of the wildlife right outside his door most times. He especially loved a special turtle he named “Horace” and the armadillos that
dug holes in his yard. His yard was their haven. He also took in strays often. He was a gifted mechanic and had a special interest in gadgets and motors of all kind. He could tell the type of car, motorcycle, tractor, or lawnmower by the sound of the
engine. He grew up in the Castor community. He was a truly good, generous, and kind man–traits instilled in him by his parents. Despite the fact that he had no biological children, he served as a stable, supportive, and loving father figure to his
nieces, nephews, and step-children and was much loved by each of them.

Pallbearers are Michael C. Hollingsed, Jason “Barry” Feldt, Jarrod Feldt, R.T. Laughlin, Kenny Ferguson, and Steven Smith. Honorary pallbearers are
Michael J. Hollingsed, Barry Feldt, Robert Laughlin, Tracey Stanly, and Claude Gosnell.
