HORNBECK — Brady Alexander picked the best time to have a career outing.

Alexander connected on 12-of-14 free throws and drilled a pair of three-pointers en route to a career-high 36 points as he guided the Hornbeck Hornets to a 52-45 win on Friday against the Simpson Broncos in a huge District 3-C showdown.

Hornbeck’s victory over Simpson has forced the Broncos into a tie with Pleasant Hill in first place in the league standings at 7-3. A decision is still pending on how they intend to break the tie at the top of the district.

The Broncos opened the game by taking a 9-8 lead at the end of the first period, but Alexander dominated the second quarter for the Hornets, leading them on an 18-9 surge and a 26-18 advantage at the intermission.

The Hornets added to their lead with an 18-17 edge in the third period and held off a furious Simpson run in the fourth to hold on for the victory.

Alexander was the lone scorer in double figures for Hornbeck as Devyn Sharp came in with eight points.

“Brady really played hard,” said Hornbeck head coach Charlie Alexander. “But his teammates did a good job of setting him up and he went right at Simpson, especially when they got in a little foul trouble.

“This was a big win for us and you could tell from the emotion on our players’ faces after the game it meant something to them,” Alexander added. “It was a big win in a big atmosphere.”

Braxton Basco, Heath Dalme and Ethan Nash each had 10 points in the loss for the Broncos.
