Indians beat LaGrange, Sam Houston; Hornets top Minden

MOSS BLUFF — The Anacoco Indians are proving to be giant killers as they defeated both the LaGrange Gators and the Sam Houston Broncos in the annual Sam Houston Tournament early this week.
The Indians knocked off Class 4A LaGrange on Monday, 72-68, behind 26 points from Dustin Welch. Brayden Prichard added 16 points and Landin Draughn contributed 14 points. LaGrange had five players reach double digits, led by 14 points from Calyb Mitchell. Tamarius Jackson, Knyles Randall and Jason Wilson each added 12 points, while Markell Jackson finished with 10 points.
On Tuesday, Anacoco overcame homestanding and Class 5A Sam Houston, 49-38. Once again, Welch led the way with 15 points, while Prichard and Emanuel Luzardo finished with 13 points each. Sam Houston got a game-high 18 points from Seth Ned.
In other tournament action, the Hornbeck Hornets split a pair at the Doc Edwards Tournament at Airline High School, falling to Northwood of Shreveport, but beating the Minden Crimson Tide.
Against Northwood on Monday, the Hornets owned a three-point halftime lead before falling to the Falcons, 67-55. Jaren Mitcham led Hornbeck with 18 points in the loss, while Brady Alexander came in with 14 points.
On Tuesday, Hornbeck rebounded to defeat the Crimson Tide of Minden, 54-43. Mitcham and Alexander each had 17 points in the win, while Devyn Sharp finished with 12 points.
Rounding out basketball action in Vernon Parish, the Pitkin Tigers had three players reach double figures in a 66-35 road win Tuesday night over the East Beauregard Trojans. Matthew Paul led the Tigers with 18 points, while Jayce Thompson chipped in with 14 points. Dalton Maricle added 13 points for Pitkin. East Beauregard’s Ashton Kennedy led all scorers with 19 points.
