BATON ROUGE – While most folks were more concerned with the deep freeze affecting the state of Louisiana, the state's high school athletic association had a busy day.

No, they weren't shoveling sidewalks or de-icing windshields at their offices in Baton Rouge. Instead, they announced the girls' basketball playoff brackets.

Games have been scheduled to take place as early as Thursday, but the possibility of more wintry weather forced the LHSAA to tweak the playing dates a little, as some teams are opting to play later in the week as to avoid treacherous road conditions.

There will only be four area teams in action this weekend as seven other area teams won't return to the hardwood until early next week due to having first-round byes.

Merryville, Fairview, Anacoco, Hicks, Simpson, Hornbeck and Evans will all be involved in second-round games next week, but Rosepine, South Beauregard, East Beauregard and Pitkin have first-round games beginning on Thursday.

In Class 1A, district rivals East Beauregard, seeded at No. 18, will take the short trip east to meet up with No. 15 Oberlin. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, with the winner facing No. 2 Merryville next week. Entry fee is $8 per person.

In Class 3A, third-seeded South Beauregard will host No. 30 Wossman at 6 p.m. Thursday. Admission is set at $8 per person.

Two games have been slated for Saturday as No. 18 Pitkin takes to the road against No. 15 Weston, while No. 7 Rosepine will host No. 26 Northeast.

Pitkin's Class B contest is set for 4 p.m. with an admission price of $8, while Rosepine's Class 2A first-round outing will be at 5 p.m. with a $7 entry cost per person.Additionally, Rosepine's game can be heard live on Today's Country 105.7 with Will Norris and Chastain Tavares on the call.

Leesville, Pickering, DeRidder and Singer either did not make the playoffs.
