VINTON – Needless to say, the Vinton Lions defense was "Freyed" after playing the Rosepine Eagles on Friday night.
Eagle quarterback Ethan Frey threw for a season-high 323 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for another as Rosepine blasted the Lions in district play, 34-13.
With the win, the Eagles are 2-2 overall, including a 1-1 record in district play heading into a pivotal showdown at McKee-McCain Stadium next week in the annual Big Dog Jug game against the Pickering Red Devils.
Rosepine jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the opening quarter as Frey went to work. He connected on a 54-yard scoring strike to Jake Smith and hit Cole Donahue on a 30-yard TD pass to give the Eagles an early advantage.
Vinton got on the board late in the first period with a big play of its own when Lucan Bunting hooked up with Jayden Carrier on a 64-yard touchdown pass, cutting the gap to 13-7.
However, Rosepine managed to take a 21-7 lead at the half, thanks to a 1-yard TD run by Frey and a 2-point conversion pass from Frey to Donahue.
After a scoreless third, Rosepine saw its lead dwindle to 21-13 when Noah Gary scored on a 3-yard TD run.
But Rosepine struck with another big connection from Frey to Smith, this time covering 67 yards as the Eagles claimed a 27-13 lead.
Grant Ducote capped the Rosepine scoring on the evening as he rambled on from a yard out and a 34-13 win.
Ducote accounted for 55 yards rushing in his return to action on 10 totes.
Smith reeled in three receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while Bryant Merriwether had four catches for 72 yards. Donahue added a TD and four catches for 51 yards in the contest.
Gary ran for 102 yards and a touchdown for Vinton, while Bunting had 162 yards through the air, with Carrier accounting for 125 of those yards.
