Thelma Blackwell

Thelma Alene Martin Blackwell, 98, of DeRidder went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 3, 2016.
Mrs. Blackwell was born on November 27, 1917 in Boise, La. to William and Virginia Whatley Martin. Mrs. Blackwell was a
long-time resident of Mora and retired from Civil Service at Fort Polk, where she worked in Supply. She was of
the Baptist faith and a member of Ludington Baptist Church in DeRidder. She was a past president of a Sunday School Class at
the First Baptist Church in Leesville. She loved crocheting, painting and gardening flowers, but her greatest loves were her family and grandchildren.
Mrs. Blackwell was preceded in death by her husband, Elvie Blackwell; parents, William
“Elias” Martin and Virginia “Jane” Whatley; one son, Wayne Blackwell; three brothers, Durwood, Hershel and Homer Martin.
Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Wade Blackwell and wife, Jan, of Hemphill, Texas; two daughters, Wanda
McClure of Lincolnton, Ga., Marie Slatten of DeRidder; daughter –in- law, Martha Blackwell of Simpson; brother, Vincent Ted Martin of Pollock; sisters, Lois Marrow and husband, Carl, of Baton Rouge, Lavada Powell of Leesville; 14 grandchildren and a
host of great – grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hixson Funeral Home of Leesville. Funeral services will be held
on Wednesday, January 6, 2016
at 2:00 PM at Hixson. Interment will follow in Comrade Cemetery.
