Robert Y. Hernandez

Retired Sgt. 1st. Class Robert Y. Hernandez passed away Tuesday Sept. 20 at
his residence in Pueblo West, Colo.
Robert was a long time resident of Leesville prior to moving to Pueblo West, Colo. four years ago. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Margarito and Margarita Hernandez, his brother Juan Y.
Hernandez, his sister Olga Mae Vasquez and great grandson Nickolas R. Hernandez.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Mary A Byrd; children; Rhonda (Jeremy), Ronald (Patricia), Russell, Robert Jr. (Deborah), Sandra (Lawrence);
eight grandchildren, one great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers, Albino (Santa), Jose (Kathy Anne), Mark, sister-in-law Patricia (Rickey) Robertson, brothers-in-law Harvey (Cheryl) Byrd and Michael
Byrd.
Robert retired from the Army, having served in Vietnam, Korea, Germany and other posts. He was a drill sergeant, materials control specialist, and tank commander in the 77th Armored Division. He was the recipient of many awards and
medals including: the Bronze Star, Army Commendation, Combat Infantry, Vietnam Campaign, Drill Sergeant Badge, two overseas bars, and Good Conduct Medal (5th Award). Robert went on to retire from civil service. He was a loving husband, devoted father
and grandfather and will be missed by all.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at Hixson Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 in the Hixson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow
in Heritage Rowe Cemetery in Leesville under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Leesville.
