Services to celebrate the home going of Mr. Marion J. Smith, age 86, of
Jonesboro,will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday March 2, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, with Dr. Charles Wesley, Rev. Rick Cole and Rev. Stuart Toms officiating. Interment will follow at the Sweetwater Cemetery in Quitman. The family will
receive guest on Tuesday evening between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home.
Marion J. Smith was born on September 15, 1924 and went to be with his heavenly father and loved ones on February 27, 2011. He was preceded in
death by his parents Joel G. Smith and Rosa Adams Smith; sister Exie Smith McDow; and brothers Melton Smith and Rev. Jesse Glover Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Girline Murphy Smith; son, Bruce Marion Smith of
Ruston; and daughter, Angela Smith Dowden and husband Chuck of Leesville; granddaughter, Jennifer Michelle Dowden of Baton Rouge; grandson, Trey Dowden of Leesville; sister-in-law, Maud Smith of Mansfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was an extremely proud veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Following his military service he embarked on a career in jewelry and watch repair and was the president of Smith Jewelers
until his retirement. He was a longtime member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, past member of the Jackson Parish School Board and Jackson Parish Hospital Board. He was past president of the Louisiana Jewelers of America and the
recipient of the first annual most outstanding jeweler of Louisiana. He was a charter member and past president of the Jonesboro-Hodge Kiwanis Club.
Pallbearers are Shawn Murphy, Ricky Murphy, James McDow, Ricky McDow, Donnie Smith, Rev.
Ed Boyd and Randy Layfield. Honorary Pallbearers are the Deacons of the First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Brotherhood at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.
