Funeral services for John “J. W.” Monk, 82, of Leesville will be held at 1
p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Leesville, with Rev. Edwin McCullough, Bro. Steve Netherland, Rev. Dale Poe and Rev. Luther Despino. The burial will follow in the Silver Creek Cemetery in Leesville,
under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday and then 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday in the funeral home.
J. W., the son of Leslie and Annie Yates Monk, was born January 12,
1929 in Weathersby, Miss. He passed away Sunday, February 20 at his residence in Leesville.
John married the love of his life, Voncile Dunaway, on October 1, 1950. He retired from the US Army, in 1972, as a staff sergeant after serving 25
years; during his career he served in the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict. After he retired from the Army he worked for the Vernon Parish School Board in the maintenance department. John loved football, fishing the outdoors and loved to travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Myrtle Marie Foster and a brother, Wilmer T. Monk.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Voncile Dunaway Monk of Leesville; sons, Rev. John Monk and wife Terri of Baltimore,
Maryland and Timothy Monk and wife Andria of Mineral Wells, Texas; daughters, Dianne Willis of Leesville and Kay Cooley and husband Lynn of Leesville; brother, Walter Dewitt Monk of Pearl, Miss; sister, Rosie Etta Benton of Crystal Springs, Miss;
sister-in-law, Maxie Angisworth and husband John of Mize, Miss; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
