John Malcolm Smart, Sr.

John Malcolm Smart, Sr. was born in Leesville on January 11, 1921 and passed away in Baton Rouge on February 1, 2010. He served in the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific, participating in the Marine assault of Tarawa during World
War II. He retired from the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department as chief deputy after many years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he worked in uniform sales at Caplan’s Men’s Store in Alexandria. He was a devoted husband, a loving father
and a favorite uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leesville.
Malcolm is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Guinell West Smart and his son, John Malcolm, Jr. and wife Emilie, all
of Baton Rouge. He is also survived by his brothers, Darrell Smart and wife Margie of Havelock, N.C., Albert Smart and wife Virginia Martin of Forest Hill, Dawin Smart and wife Helen of Alexandria, Harles Smart and wife Amesses; sister-in-law, Anna
Smart Armijo and husband George of Leesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Reese and Bertha Stewart Smart and brother Harold Smart.
Visitation will be held at Hixson Funeral Home in Leesville on Wednesday, February 3,
2010, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. continuing on Thursday, February 4, 2010, from 9 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m., Hixson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Self Cemetery on Hwy 111, under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home, 508 S. 5th St.
