Laura Velma Walker Richie, 89, of Columbus, Ga., died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at her home in Columbus, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Reverend Richard
L. Richie officiating. Interment will follow at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, Ga. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Friday from noon until service time.
Mrs. Richie
was born in Peason on December 26, 1920 to the late Thomas Jefferson Walker, Sr. and Laura Lutacia Dowden Walker. She has lived in Columbus since 1947 and was a trained meat cutter, first at Kroger’s then Colonial Store, and then became the first
female meat cutter at the Ft. Benning Commissary. In the mid 1960’s she became a licensed beautician, owning and operating her own salon for several years. She was a former member of South Columbus United Methodist Church and Midway United Methodist
Church. Mrs. Richie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Richie, a brother, Guy Porter and a sister, Pearl Porter Spears.
Survivors include her seven children, Robert W. Richie and wife Cammy of Yorktown, Va., Carole
A. Slemons and husband Ken of Ellerslie, Ga., T. Francine Anderson and husband, Delos of Palm Coast, Fla., Brenda D. Buckley of Columbus, Ga., Myra J. Call and husband Jim of Hinesville, Ga., Martha R. Porter and husband Rick of Columbus, Ga. and
Debra L. Lewis and husband Paul of Columbus, Ga.; four sisters, Elma Lee Gass, Jirlene Spears, Betty Behan and Maxine Bridges, all of Louisiana; one brother, Thomas Jefferson Walker, Jr. of Ft. Worth, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
