Mrs. Alma Lee Wilson-Brown, a mother, daughter, wife, sister, aunt, Poet Laureate, educator and most
importantly a child of God, was called home to be with her maker on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.
Mrs. Brown was born on September 10, 1930 in Leesville, to her parents Barney and Essie Wilson, who had preceded her in
death.
She attended all of her grade-level education in Leesville; her undergraduate education was from Wiley College, Marshall, Texas, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree, and her graduate education came from Texas
Southern University, Houston, Texas, where she received her Master’s of Education Degree. In addition, she had spent numerous hours studying in post graduate-level courses.
Mrs. Brown returned to her home and followed her love of
education, as a teacher (general science, biology, and home economics), plus she had at one point in time been a ladies basketball coach for Vernon High School. She retired in 1973, but later went back into the educational system and worked in
several capacities, including teaching Head Start, early childhood education, and being the in-school suspension (I.S.S.) teacher at Leesville Junior High School. She was a very active member of her church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and of her
community, until her health began to slow her down.
Mrs. Alma L. Brown was a loving wife to Alex Brown, until he preceded her in death in 1975. She leaves to sadly mourn her: two children, Terence Alexander Brown and Tonya Faith
Brown-Johnson; three grandchildren, T’Mond Alexander Johnson, Ta’Shoyn Rainier Johnson, and Ta’Onyal Faith Johnson. Also, she leaves to mourn her: siblings, Dorothy Benson (DeSoto, Texas), Maxine Gunn, Comeola Smith, and Barney J. Wilson (all of
Leesville), Maudry Williams (Chicago, Ill.), J.D. Wilson (Detroit, Mich.); “deceased” Juanita Johnson Brown, “deceased” Freddie L. McClanahan, and a host of nieces, nephews, and Christian friends.
Lastly, she will not be forgotten,
but truly remembered, as being a loving and faithful mother who trusted God and is now safe and at rest.
The services, for Mrs. Alma L. Brown, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009 at 1 p.m. and a wake will be held on Wednesday, Aug.
5, 2009 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. both at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Leesville. Burial will follow in the Leesville Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.
