Myrtle Palmer

Private graveside services for Mrs. Myrtle S. Palmer will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009 in
the Leesville Cemetery with the Rev. Wallace Palmer officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Leesville.
Visitation will be held from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009 in the Hixson Chapel. Mrs. Palmer
passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009 in Rosepine at 91. She was a native of Charleston, S.C. but had lived most of her adult life in Leesville. She was a 1939 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and after graduation joined the U.S. Army where
she served from 1940 -1944 as an Army Nurse during WW II.
During this time, she met her husband Benson”Lyons” Palmer and moved with him to Leesville where she worked as a school nurse and secretary at the West Leesville Elementary
School. She was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross, Museum of West Louisiana and taught crochet to students at the Leesville State School. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Leesville and former member of the Eastern Star.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Benson “Lyons” Palmer; her parents; and great-grandson Christopher Pate.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Benson Palmer Jr. and Patricia of The Villages, Fla.; brother Louis Smith of
Dannville, Va.; one sister, Virginia Eager; three grandchildren, Malissa Pate, Mandy Mossman and Benson Palmer III; five great-grandchildren Ashley, Casey, Christopher Pate, Tony West and Logan Mossman.
